Default Mexican-American or American-Mexican?

I was asked the other day what my racial background is and I respnded Mexican. Same person asked me American-Mexican? I said Mexican-American.
That got me to thinking... If you were born in the US are you American-Mexican? Or is it still Mexican-American? Really Im confussed.

Right! lol

I don't know what "racial background" even means... but I say I'm Mexican or Chicana. It really depends who I'm talking to, and if I feel like getting into the term "Chicana" or not. lol

x2. I tell people I'm Mexican or Chicano, fuck the hyphenated bullshit.

If white people can claim to be Cajun/Creole in Louisiana, and Swedish, German, or Polish in the midwest, and Irish or Italian on the east coast, why can't I just be Mexican or Chicano?

Can someone say double standard?

I've never heard of any other country using the hyphens to identify someone's descent.

Ditto. Isn't it funny how the people whose ethnic identity is hyphenated the most are usually people of color?

Its almost as if its done to make us feel foreign & shit.

It's not about where you're born, but what you can identify the most with. Even then, it's just a stupid label. In the end, you're just Miss Maggie and you should be happy with that...

You can choose to acknowledge your ethnicity. Therefore, American of Mexican descent would be most appropriate. You can say Mexican-American too.. that's most common.

Trying to be unique now? Are you going to become a hipster and take on freelance photography?

HA.

I guess having a label gives people (you) a sense of importance or belonging? I'm not so sure what it is, but I definitely don't have that need.

I do take photographs for stories sometimes though, so I guess you got me?

That was a good movie. Maribel Verdu is one good looking female with a rockin body.

That means made in Mexico, apulido. I'm sure many white kids were made in Mexico on their honeymoon in a hotel room.
