Default Freedom Writters

The movie Hilary Swank is going to be in that comes out on the 5th of January. Looks liek it is going to be a good movie, i think i will have to catch it.

A dedicated California teacher finds a way to unify her disadvantaged, racially divided students, and to improve their grasp of academics, partly by having them keep journals about their violent, troubled lives.

It does look like it's going to be a good one. Might catch it next weekend. Is it "inspired" by a true story?

^^Seems like it.

I'm tired of these type of movies. Those movies, dance movies, and the type that have a football/basketball team who struggle and win championships..

SHorty i dont know if it is based on a true story or not. But seems like a good message will be in it. And that is all that is important about these type of movies, the message that it gets out there.

The sports stories do annoy me more for some reason, but if it is a sports story that shows it helped more then one person get out of a bad situation, then i like that more.

I say it is a stand and deliver type of movie, but i wouldnt go so far to say PART II.

"you dont know nufnin aiight!!"

These movies get on my nerves. Another "Dangerous Minds" type movie.
Gonna have the cliche "minorities" in the movie acting out "risque" subjects and also be promoted as "a cutting edge cultural movie."
They will of course have the "mexican american" that is really played by a puerto rican or cuban.
All the so-called latinos will be white(ish) or black(ish) but not brown
(but who can tell because they speak spanish right?) even tho Mexicans make up over 75% or so of the so-called latino population.

I think this movie warrants a Mexica Movement protest.. where Anahuac History when u need him?

Of course man are going to say it looks liek a remake of Stand and Deliver and Dangerous Minds. But what does that really have to do with it? Yeah it is true if ya see one they are very siiliar, but there are the different storys and that is what is good.

Hillary Swank did a good job in her acting in this movie. Yeah the actors playing the Mexican role might not be fully mexican, but who is to say all the
so called "MEXICAN LOOKING" people are actually Mexican. Ya know there are more then Mexicans in the barrio, right? SO maybe a role is played by a Mexican, or a Salvadorian or a Puerto Rican, are there not those types in living in L.A?

Next someone is going to say that they play the gang shit up more then it actually is. But this movie is not set in such a current time. It is set 2 yrs after the Rodney King riots. And to say that the gang activity is not as bad as the movie may make it out to be, i am sure others will argue that it is.

As I walk through the valley of the shadow of death
I take a look at my life and realize there's not much left
coz I've been blastin and laughin so long, that
even my mama thinks that my mind is gone
but I ain't never crossed a man that didn't deserve it
me be treated like a punk you know that's unheard of
you better watch how you're talking, and where you're walking
or you and your homies might be lined in chalk
I really hate to trip but i gotta, loc
As I Grow I see myself in the pistol smoke, fool
I'm the kinda G the little homies wanna be like
on my knees in the night, saying prayers in the streetlight

been spending most their lives, living in the gangsta's paradise
been spending most their lives, living in the gangsta's paradise
keep spending most our lives, living in the gangsta's paradise
keep spending most our lives, living in the gangsta's paradise

They got the situation, they got me facin'
I can't live a normal life, I was raised by the stripes
so I gotta be down with the hood team
too much television watching got me chasing dreams
I'm an educated fool with money on my mind
got my 10 in my hand and a gleam in my eye
I'm a loc'd out gangsta set trippin' banger
and my homies is down so don't arouse my anger, fool
death ain't nothing but a heartbeat away,
I'm living life, do or die, what can I say
I'm 23 now, but will I live to see 24
the way things are going I don't know

[Chorus:]

Tell me why are we, so blind to see
That the one's we hurt, are you and me
been spending most their lives, living in the gangsta's paradise
been spending most their lives, living in the gangsta's paradise
spending most our lives, living in the gangsta's paradise
spending most our lives, living in the gangsta's paradise

Power and the money, money and the power
minute after minute, hour after hour
everybody's running, but half of them ain't looking
what's going on in the kitchen, but I don't know what's kickin'
they say I gotta learn, but nobody's here to teach me
if they can't undersstand it, how can they reach me
I guess they can't, I guess they won't
I guess they front, that's why I know my life is out of luck, fool

been spending most their lives, living in the gangsta's paradise
been spending most their lives, living in the gangsta's paradise
spending most our lives, living in the gangsta's paradise
spending most our lives, living in the gangsta's paradise
Tell me why are we, so blind to see
That the one's we hurt, are you and me
Tell me why are we, so blind to see
That the one's we hurt, are you and me

Well since Holywood is notorious for not giving Mexican roles to Mexicans I think it should be a point of concern. Especially if the story is based in Los Angeles.

netflix anyone? I'll probably do a "troubled school kids" marathon at my house. Pop this one in, followed by dangerous minds and end it on the great film stand and deliver.

or maybe substitute? lol no wait HIGH SCHOOL HIGH. now that is a movie worth watching again.

Well i see your point, but only if this movie was based soley on Mexicans. But since it is n ot, i dont see a point of concern. Besides, to me it wouldnt diminish the point and message of the movie either way.

I disagree. I can see that it might have a good message, albeit I believe the integrity of the intention is diminished when they are not accurate in their portrayals. I mean it's not hard to find a good chicano actor or actress to play a mad gangster type role and have them say "u dont know nuffnen, aiight!"
but thats just my opinion thus far without having seen the movie. Who knows, maybe there are a thousand (brown) mexicans in the movie with no major speaking roles to represent just like in that Frida movie.
