Default LGBT Rights

Hillary Clinton endorsed same sex marriage today, with the following message:

Hillary Clinton has announced her support for marriage equality, and done so with this wonderfully eloquent statement (http://maddowblog.msnbc.com/_news/20...age-equality):

"LGBT Americans are our colleagues, our teachers, our soldiers, our friends, our loved ones -- and they are full and equal citizens, and deserve the rights of citizenship. That includes marriage.

"That's why I support marriage for lesbian and gay couples. I support it personally and as a matter of policy and law, embedded in a broader effort to advance equality and opportunity for LGBT Americans and for all Americans. Like so many others, my views have been shaped over time by people I have known and loved, by my experience representing our nation on the world stage, my devotion to law and human rights, and the guiding principles of my faith.

"Marriage, after all, is a fundamental building block of our society -- a great joy, and yes, a great responsibility. A few years ago, Bill and I celebrated as our own daughter married the love of her life and I wish every parent that same joy. To deny the opportunity to any of our daughters and sons solely on the basis of who they are and who they love is to deny them the chance to live up to their God given potential."

What is your opinion? How do you feel about it and why, and if this has evolved for you

Please be respectful at all times!!!

If I was a woman I'd probably be a lesbian and slutty one too

Everyone should have the right to love and equal rights to marry. I have a very close lesbian friend who has a beautiful relationship with her partner yet they have no rights if something were to happen to she or her partner.

I'm not a huge advocate for marriage, but that doesn't mean I don't support the right for our LGBT brothers and sisters. It looks like we're finally taking steps in the right direction.

This is indeed very timely considering the Supreme Court is hearing before them the next couple of days two potentially landmark cases in this regard..

http://news.yahoo.com/blogs/ticket/s...-politics.html

Quote:
In oral arguments on Tuesday morning the 9 justices will consider whether California’s voter approved ban on gay marriage, Proposition 8, unfairly discriminates against gay people. On Wednesday, they’ll consider whether the 1996 Defense of Marriage Act barring the U.S. government from recognizing same-sex marriages, even in states that allow them, constitutes federal overreach.
Aside from my personal feelings on the subject (probably not what you think) This could get very interesting..

I am so proud of my soy familia (:

I had read some negative threads from 2006/2007 about LGBT rights which is why I asked everyone to remain respectful, but I am glad that was not necessary.

I also support LGBT rights and I am an ally (:
My opinion has shifted from when I was in high school.

I really, really hope that Proposition 8 gets overturned!!!

Chicanodan and Cal can get married if thats what they want.....

On the real though, some group is holding a rally today at the Texas capitol about LGBT rights and pro-choice rights, ect. My reporter interviewed a guy yesterday who was talking about how, "They were infringing on their religious freedom". Guess the hypocrite didnt get that his ideas and thoughts and argument was infringing on the others sides religious freedom.

I think those members left a long time ago plus those who had those opinions have became respectful and/or change opinion (a lot changes in 6-7 years.).

I think all marriages are gay, but the queers should have the same right to suffer, just like the straights.

I've never had a problem with the gays (except gay dudes leering at me) or them getting married. It just makes no sense to care who other strangers are fucking.
I remember those old threads on Soy, where a bunch of morons thought they were being tolerant by allowing the gays to have "civil unions" but it shouldnt be called "marriage".
Because why? Your kids will catch the gay? they'll think its cool and want to become gay?

Love it. I gave it a break after the election but every once in a while a friend will annoy me with their nonsense.

I know what you mean I currently have that one Catholic acquaintance who keeps posting stuff like this:

picture here

You may or may not be able to see it depending on the settings for that user.

I actually tried one of the neutralizing statements that I learned yesterday and said the following:

I would like to understand your position better, I can see it from a religious standpoint (well sort of), but marriage as it is being discussed is a legal standpoint, the benefits that are being denied etc, are from a legal perspective.

What I really wanted to say was WTF? Not everyone in this country is the same religion or has the same values, why must we insist that everyone follows what you think is right?

I support same sex marriage , if you're happy with someone and you wanna spend the rest of your life with them then go ahead tie the knot. I have a couple gay-lesbian friends and even a gay cousin back in the mean streets of México, so anyways equal rights to citizens bitches !

Both sides are stubborn in my opinion. One side doesn't want gay people to use the word marriage and the other side refuses not to use the word marriage.

For those that think "marriage" is a sacred word, perhaps straight people can be a little more cautious about who they marry....the divorce rate in this country is horrendous. The word marriage has already lost most of its meaning, so who gives shit.

My 2cents.

Besides, there are far more important issues right now. . .

Yea, I don't really care about the issue, so as far as I'm concerned they should be able to marry and deal with the same legal crap everyone else has to deal with when they want to split up

I have to paraphrase this from the Showtime dramedy Shameless..

It seems to me that the biggest problem that people have with gays is all the great gay sex they're having .. Well if that's their problem then they should allow gays to get married.. because we all know the sex is all downhill from there once you say "I Do"
