It's a 12 year cycle.
From February full moon of a year to the next February last day before full moon.

The 12 year cycle goes like this:
1972-RAT 1978-HORSE
1973-OX 1979-RAM
1974-TIGER 1980-MONKEY
1975-RABBIT 1981-ROOSTER
1976-DRAGON 1982-DOG
1977-SNAKE 1983-BOAR

Then the whole thing repeats, so if you were born in 1984; that's a RAT year.
Same for figuring someone older. Example, if someone was born in 1971; that's a BOAR year, get it ?
But remember, Feb. to Feb. (full moon) So let's say you were born in January or early Feb. You are under the sign of previous year.
