Default McConnell Says Progress On Immigration Reform Unlikely In 2014

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) says it is unlikely that an immigration reform package will pass in Congress this year. His comments casts a shadow on renewed optimism that a compromise might be potentially be on the horizon following the House GOP's recently-released standards for immigration reform.

I think we have sort of an irresolvable conflict here, McConnell said Tuesday. The Senate insists on comprehensive [legislation]. The House says it wont go to conference with the Senate on comprehensive and wants to look at [it] step by step. I dont see how you get to an outcome this year with the two bodies in such a different place, he said.

One of the main areas of contention between the two chambers is that Senate Democrats want a path to citizenship, while the House GOP package provides an opportunity for legal residency but no path to citizenship.

However, according to The Hill, McConnell thinks the biggest obstacle of passage lies in the fact that the Senate wants to pass one comprehensive bill, while the House wants to handle immigration reform in a piecemeal manner.
