For example my parents, even though my parents are from the same state, northern and southern Jalisco are almost like two different states. Anyway, I don't think my dad ever celebrated day of the dead until he moved to TJ while my mom's family does it different than what most people do it.

Halloween is about the time where the two worlds are in closest range, around Oct 31. As far as I know this is true, and derives from Celtics.

Dia de los muertos DOES NOT EXIST. The Catholics that invaded this world encouraged to El dia de todos los Santos day to become dia de los muertos. In Aztec times, there was a whole month for the dead adults, another whole month for the young dead, neither of them fall in October or November.

nowadays in Mexico you find people "celebrating" Halloween as well. dia de los muertos is still definitely recognized but people in Mexico are really catching on to the Halloween holiday as well, specifically the costumes. They REALLY like the dressing up part of it and that's really the only thing they recognize from Halloween. My family in Mexico has had Halloween parties in which the family gets together in their costumes and just have a comida. The classmates of my cousins at their prep schools/colleges also wear their costumes to class that day.

When I was in Sonora 2 weeks ago, I saw people camping out at the cemeteries. They take chairs, umbrellas, food, drink, music and just hang out with their dearly departed. There were many people from the States that journey back just for this day. It was a cool scene.

With the movie Coco being about two years old now, I wonder what folks think about the commercialization of Dia De Los Muertos.

I do a small celebration myself now.

Just Halloween. We dress up and accompany the kiddos to go get the kandy. Dia de los Mertos, I'm thinking like parades, alters and stuff. I'm looking at the face painting they do and get ideas for halloween costume.
