Default I don't know what camera to buy...

I'm taking a trip to niagara falls on June 24 and I want to buy a camera to take some good pics, my budget is 1k, what would you buy or what do you have?

umm i don't know anything about cameras, I just want one that can take impressive pics, the camera I have right now sucks!

The Canon G10 is an excellent option. You can find it for around $400, not that bad for the quality of images you get. It's one of the best Point and Shoot cameras out in the market now.

i ask because if portability is important, than going with a point&shoot(like the one megustahoy posted) is the way to go. if portability is not important, then a DSLR(like the one oldies rule forever posted) is the better option. You will get better quality pictures because you can change lenses. but they require a significant money investment when you start including good lenses to go with the camera.

I will also take the time and go into the spiel that hardware doesn't surpass skill. Learn the basics of photography, exposure and lighting and you can create a great looking pictures from most sub $200 cameras out there. Don't learn the basics and not even a 7K camera body will help you take impressive pics.

I really hope that makes sense and in no way discouraging you. Just something to think about.

I just bought my Nikon D3100 I love it! Its the first expensive camera I have ever bought.

Great choice!!! you wont regret it one bit! I am a big fan of Nikon cameras and you will get a lot of good quality photos.

I suggest that you learn how to use it manual it gives you more interesting shots!
