Basic tips eh?

Point the camera at the subject. Depress the shutter release button!

Oh and make sure you are in focus!

LOL

Really though... first and most important tip is to read your camera's manual. Once you know all the ins and outs of your camera, the rest is easy to come with.

If you are using a camera that has program modes (settings where everything is automatically set for you) then there isn't much else do to but worry about lighting.

If you are using a camera with manual settings such as fstop, shutter speed, ISO... then I would highly suggest doing some Google'ing and learning about the definitions and what their purpose in photography is. When using manual settings and have a general understanding of fstop, shutter speed, and ISO speeds... you will find yourself instantly taking better photographs.

Also read up on the "Rule of Thirds", Photo Composition, and Negative Space.

Good luck!

Learn from your mistakes! I'd say take various shots of the same pic with different modes and check out the diference. Also the lighning is something that you have to learn.

^Ha ha dork...jk jk...Anyway, once you have learned the in's & out's of your camera, don't be afraid to occasionally push or break the rules a bit...

My wife is a self taught photographer, & often because she didn't know the lighting faux pas, she would shoot anyway, and as a result we ended up with some amazing shots...Sometimes your equipment might be able to actually go beyond what the manufactures specs say in certain instances...and then wow...

my basic tip for taking pictures is to experiment with angle & focal length. Instead of just taking a picture straight on, trying getting on your knees and getting a low angle shot(Works great with kids!) or get on a chair for a high angle shot. Changing the angle can dramatically change the "feel" of your photo, EXPERIMENT. I for one I am tired of parents taking pictures of children from their own POV. Get down to their level and snap a picture, you will notice the picture is not only better but it gives it a different "feel"

Also rather than taking a wide shot of something, see if you can get close. If it's an object, it's nice if you can get a detail shot of it by getting in close. If you are shooting something up close, back up and shot a wide picture of it too.

in the old days I would agree, but nowadays with digital cameras you won't be able to snap the picture of the cap is on and since most rely on the lcd screen, you noticed that it's all black.

I just got a nice new camera and I'm looking for some tips. But it's digital and from what I can tell I am limited in what I can do to alter the lens unless i utilize a pre-set option such as portrait, landscape, landscape night, etc.

it takes great pictures though. Only problem is I need to buy some rechargeable batteries.

Focus on lighting and perspective if you cant adjust much else with the camera.

yeah I am trying to get out of the POV habit. lighting is a little difficult but I would love to get a backdrop and some lighting to really be able to take some nice pics.

And as for lighting... if shooting outdoors, any type of material can be used as a reflector or more. You can even make one out of a white sheet or even paper. Get some friends to help you out. Tell them they can be a photographer's assistant.

^ lol I like your thinking. I'm not a pro in the least but it is a fun hobby, plus my girl being photogenic doesn't hurt. I posted a bunch of pics on facebook. I still need to upload them to flickr too see what (if any) feedback I get.

I would love to one day print out my own photos. that would also be a cool thing to learn. I just seem to be picking up to many hobbies right now, hope I don't loose interest in any of them because they are all fun/rewarding things to do.

And thanks sj for the advice i'll have to try that out. But I would like a white background and lights for pics indoors.

Printing out photos is always fun. I recently printed a bunch out and gave em away to family.

It's a huge difference from seeing ur pics on the computer to seeing them on photo paper. Play with cropping them. Crop in close and tight and see how an ordinary photo looks so much more different in printed form.

Give them away to family and friends and see how much praise u get. Photogrpaher gets used to the images and can sometimes become accustomed to it. Your audience will remind u of ur GREAT shots!
