Default Soy Chicano Book Club?

Earlier i pondered the idea of a book club for us SoyC members. Many of us are avid readers who know how to enjoy a good book.
How much greater still if your fellow SoyC friends can come along too on the adventure of a lifetime?

I propose we start a book club for those interested. 1 book a month to keep it simple. No more then 3 chapters will be read by all once a week. we will all read at the same pace so as not to spoil continuance of the later chapters for the rest of us.

the following monday after the reading (and the rest of that week), we can share our thoughts on the previously read. we can give suggestive critism, or compliment a well thought out sequence of events we enjoyed.

If youre interested, please say so, so we can decide on a book and start in the 1st week of October. Thats just around the corner, so please act fast!

That is a fantastic Idea SUave!!

If I may make a suggestion for the first book..

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/AS...310046-6153554

No Not really..

We would definitely have to keep it apolitical me thinks...

A once weekly chat session would be cool too...

That's a great idea. I'd like to participate (So long as the literature is in English otherwise I'll have a heck of a time keeping up! :P )

Great! I think we've garnered enough support to get this rolling. Please post your suggestions for a book as well (thanks Dan). We will vote on one no later then the 23Rd (next thursday) of the month.

By the 30th (2 weeks) it will have given us enough time to go out and buy the book, confirm our purchase and then we'll commence from there.

It might not be a bad Idea to buy them together.. Group discount?

I don;t know how you would go about doing something like that but I;m sure there are plenty of online Bookclubs that do that type of thing....

You want to make sure that the books are available at the local libraries because some of our younger members may not have the money to buy the books.

I think you should post a suggested book a week in advance to give people time to check them out from the library.

This should be a lot of fun.

In that vein..

My Real suggestion would be the Book

"Drink Cultura: Chicanismo" by Jose Antonio Burciaga..

It is a quick read, a book many have not read already and one that lends itself to discussion..

Good idea to start with the classics, Suave.

I read most of those in high school plus I have some of those books at home.

I've read this one recently. It is a good read! There are Chicano books (if you need some to choose from) in the other thread.

The list i posted was simply a starting point. Any book, by any author can be nominated. The book chosen will simply be the one which wins by the popular vote

Having said that, nominate your selection, and by thursday the 23rd, we will choose a winner.

Drink Cultura: Chicanismo" by Jose Antonio Burciaga..

sounds like a good one, and one that would be interesting to read with others - would make for good discussion.

We could become a medium for Chicano authors to get the word out about their books.

I am aware of that Kary. I was saying that maybe the books this club reads, should be books written by chicano/a authors. Otherwise, it's just another club. Know what I mean?

...it's a great idea, Suave!!!
I am in!
...do we get a member ID and all?

I'd say to start with some kind of Chicano book would be a good idea, because of the relation to soy... ...then maybe one of the classics? However,... this time I am too indecisive to nominate or vote, I guess. I am in a book club!! I am so excited
