Default post your computer setup(s)

Here are my setups
1st computer.
Old HP pavilion, athlon 2800+(2.13ghz) with one gig ram. I want to turn this machine into NAS(network attached storage). I want to get a new case for it, get a raid card and buy a few sata drives, and more memory. I hate it how it's just idle, collecting dust.

2nd computer
toshiba laptop. pentium 4 - 3.2ghz, 1gig of ram. My god this machine has given me so many problems. It runs hot, it's heavy and if you look at it the wrong way, you'll have to replace an expensive part. This is the same laptop I dropped,(if you remember that post)

3rd computer
custom built pc. Core2 duo e6600 2.4ghz, 2 gigs of ram. 1.5 terabytes of storage. This is my workhorse pc.

4th computer
macbook pro. 2.2ghz, 2 gigs of ram(tri-booting linux, windows and macOSX) bought this about 2 months ago. and it has served me well to get some work done on the road. I love it.

5th computer.
mac pro - dual xeons 2.66ghz(total of 4 cores) 4 gigs of ram. 2terabytes of storage. This is my main production machine.
Okay, your turn.

12in Powerbook G4, 1.33Ghz, 512 MB, 40GB hard drive, destroyed LCD (stupid husband), now works as our "T.V." with an external 20in flat panel LG monitor

Computer #2
17in Powerbook G4, 1.33Ghz, 1GB, 80GB hard drive, it's retired and looking for a new home (we want to buy lenses with the money )

Computer #3
17in Imac G5, 1.8Ghz, 1.5GB, 120GB hard drive, this is our "main computer" we use it for post processing (digital photography), internet, documents, design, we have a Maxtor 250GB external hard drive attached to it

Well I can remember about my first computer that it was a widnows 95, it was white, slow, and heavy....it didn't last long because i couldn't find a printer...i baught it for $100 in 2000.

2nd Computer: I done forgot, but it was an Emachines with Windows XP

3rd computer: Currently, a Emachines T5226 Windows Vista Premuim, Intel Pentuim D processor 925, featuring a dual core processing with each core running at 3.0GHz, 800MHz, 2x2 MB l2 Cache. Intel graphic media accelerator 950. Hard Drive says 250GB SATA II, 7200 RPM with 8MB Cache. 1024 MB DDR2 Dual Channel.....it's what it says in the stickers on the front. It was the the display model at circuit city, got it for $300-some'n dollars. Just baught the CPU(the metal box), i'm using the second computer's monitor, a 17" fat screen....

Currently own an Acer laptop with a Sempron @1.8GHz 3100+ with 512MB RAM and 60 GB HDD.

Also a desktop that I built myself: Turion 64 Mobile @2.2GHz 3400+ (Yes, I put a mobile CPU in my socket 754 system) with 1GB RAM, a GeForce 7600 GS Vid card and a 200GB HDD.

More details on those two if anyone wants to hear them :P

I have a Dell Inspiron 9100 desktop replacement laptop with a 2.8 P4, 1.5 gb of RAM,with a measly 80gb hard drive running at 5400rpm and external of 80gb running at the same speed.
Instead of buying a new laptop I am looking to add a 250 gb hard drive a 10,000 rpm and add my last additional half gig capacity of RAM.

Its treated me good over the last 3-4 yrs, I am craving a lil more power as i do run some not so light weight graphic programs. But I am just gonna do the lil 300$ upgrade until I have enough money to get a new one, maybe by next summer hopefully.
All in all it still runs pretty damn good.

don't bother. Buy an external drive instead. If you want a fast hard drive, you'd be better off going with a SATA drive.

I've been able to edit high def video on SATA 7200rpm drives just fine and never had the need to buy 10,000rpm drives. In fact, most of my video work(Standard def) works perfectly fine on 7200rpm drives as well(even using USB)

not sure what your needs are but just throwing out that piece of information.

haha you know, that's a really good question.

Truth is I probably don't need all 5 machines. 2 at the most.(pc and mac)

I need the mac pro to run final cut studio. It's a professional, industry standard, editing system. And to edit/process photos. I need my high end pc to work sony vegas(another editing app) and to do motion grafx work.

I have developed a good workflow between these two machines and two platforms. Using the strengths of both OS's to my advantage. Basically I need these two machines to make a living.

toshiba laptop and hp, I don't need. and I'll probably end up giving both away. If not, i'll turn the hp into NAS(As I mentioned earlier). To store personal files and back my media(photos, project files, music, etc)

My macbook pro is there for portability and provide power on the go. Offline editing, photo editing, web-use, show clients work, etc. and it's powerful enough to do production work if need be since it runs final cut studio flawlessly.

why all the power and storage?
video takes up a lot of space and it takes a lot of power to render out files quickly.

A lot of ram, a lot of storage and powerful processors become very important when doing video work.

well, i was at best buy and was checking out the hard drives , both internal and external. I already have an external and internal HD of 80 gb and both that and my laptop hard drive are coming close to capacity. Anyhow, i saw a 180 gb 7200(?) rpm (internal) hard drive(forgot what brand but not one that i have heard of) for 140$ and next to it i saw a 250 gb 10,000 rpm (and better brand, forgot the name tho) for 40$ more. That is the only reason I considered even getting that fast a hard drive. Im like fuck it, i gte more space and faster HD for only 40 $, why not?

well $180 for a 250gb drive and 140 for a 180gb drive is too high in my opinion. I recently picked up a 500gb sata seagate drive for $109.

just to be clear we are talking about the regular computer drives right? not laptop drives. laptop drives are more expensive.

yeah go with Jia's advice on newegg. You can get some good deals. Otherwise keep an eye out on bestbuy's or other retailers weekly ads/specials.
