I have always respected those who choose to be in the military, but that have made that choice with there eyes open, not just cause of the potential benefits or cause they had troubles and they thought it might help...Although with the later on occasion I guess it has helped but I would never recommend that...It is a commitment and it takes resolve...

I provided a psych evel for a guy that was AWOL cause he didn't want to go back to Iraq...He said if he had to go back he would kill himself, so he wanted to be admited to a psych hospital to aviod formal charges...

Honestly I was really irritated with this situation, but I did a thorough eval and tried to give him the benefit of the doubt...and besides I am not so sure I was irritated with him as much as the idea that someone failed to teach this fool values...

When I asked him why he did not want to go back he said "Hey I didn't sing up for this, I just wanted money for college and shit. I don't want to die." I told him that I imagined everyone in that situation is at least a little scared. That would be a normal reaction. So I asked him if he had started taking any college courses and he said yes, but his grades were not that good cause the classes he signed up for were a little boring and that they should make them more interesting. His classes were just simple basic requirements. It was clear this guy had no resolve and an inability to make a commitment to anything. F*cking milk toast...

I don't know how the military handles guys like this, if they make them go back or if they go to prison for being a deserter, but I was hoping it was the later cause I can't imagine anyone wanting this guy watching their back...or at least just give them a dishonorable discharge and send him home with nothing...To start all over again, and hopefully take away from this the lesson that he needs to try and learn how to gain resolve and learn the value of things...

In the end I told him there was no way I was going to put him in a psych hospital. The Base police came to the ER to pick him up. They walked in frowning at me and then I think they were kind of surprised when I told him I refuse to have him commited. They said "So you can releas him to us." I said "look, as of right now he is still Government Property. I can't tell the military what to do with their enlisted men any more than I can tell them what to do with a tank or a truck, or a brick or a toilet."

My advise to anyone thinking about joining the military is; If you think going to war is a reason you might not be able to fullfill your commitment, even if it is peace time, then just don't do it...

Unfortunately the Army seems to keep getting worst, they accept almost anyone, fat asses, fags (and not in the homosexual sense) winny females and males. The standards seem to be going out the door along with the discipline, I had an NCO once told me " When you are a good leader you produce good leaders and when you are a bad one you make bad ones" they promote anyone in order to keep em in. Seems that almost nobody cares anymore, the Army I came in is not the same one I'm leaving with.

So too anyone that wants to enlist in the army be either for money, collegue or to travel, there is a 99% chance you will get deployed, and like I tell my soldiers "been a soldier and not expecting to go to war is like a porno star not wanting to fuck" think about it! you simple minded mudafukas!

moralgray, interesting question. I met a guy who was unfit for the military, and also threatened to kill himself. He was discharged, but not with a dishonorable. Reason being, I believe is because if you discharge someone with a dishonorable and they have problems like that, then the military will probably have to deal with that person saying their current state of health was caused by their experiences in the military and they shouldn't give him the boot with a dishonorable (they wouldn't be able to find employment) and their medical problems. They'd probably want compensation and all this crap that the military just doesn't want to deal with and its easier to slap an honorable on the separation paperwork and just get them out.

I would consider myself a conservative, and for the most part don't question our policies and the way things are done, but this isn't one of them. I think in a case like that it should be considered desertion. In the case I speak of, that person did not deserve an honorable. He did have some serious issues, but for the shit he pulled, his mental state couldn't even excuse it. I won't get into details, but I am glad to say he is out.

the military is desperate to get new recruits in the ranks since people nowadays aren't as naive as those who decided to join because of 9/11

This is why there has been articles about the military lowering its recruiting standards to let less qualified persons join

No war stories. I have not been deployed yet, and when I do, I will likely be sitting in a vault typing away. I doubt mortars can get through that.
