Default Race: The Power of an Illusion

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=voTIVY-2iys

http://www.pbs.org/race/000_General/000_00-Home.htm

Linked are the websites and short video of a great documentary: Race: the Power of an Illusion.

I saw this way back when it was brand new freshman year and it's what helped me choose sociology as a major! I got to see it again yesterday for my Urban Seminar class, and focused on the Real Estate Industry and Racialized Geography DO take a peek at the site and comment..and if you've seen the video before..you'd know how powerful it is.

I remember after I first saw it, I was so angry..the initial reaction of people of color when they take their first sociology course on race, LOL.

cool! you should post the whole series

The Chicanos in this movie are the W.I.N. Tribe (White, Indian and Negro) and that's why we are seen as racially and intellectually inferior to pure bred white honkies and therefore a burden to this country

here are the ten facts about race from the website...im soooo exited i think ima have a heart attack....

1. Race is a modern idea
2. Race has no genetic basis
3. Slavery predates race
4. Race and freedom were born together
5. Race justified social inequalities as natural
6. Human species dont exist
7. Skin color is only skin deep.
8. Most variation is within not between "races"
9. RAce is not biological but racism is still real.
10. Colorblindess will not end racism

they are from PBS so i guess.

http://www.pbs.org/race/001_WhatIsRace/001_00-home.htm

but i think that this website would argue that race was born within the context of a new world and thus the US is involved in how race is defined...

there was still race according to the story of anthony smith ( i think that was his name) who was an indentured servant and had to fight for what he, and other indentured servants were promised after their contract of service was completed...

he had to fight harder than his white counterparts.... and race existed, IMO, withiin the relationships and interactions between the natives of north america and the european invaders...

hmmm i think that the post is trying to say that there was slavery in europe before there was race...

but to tease that out a little bit, i think that europeans were a aware of their own differences....the conception of "white" is a historically a relatively new thing and i think that it came about as black slavery was created.

ps i dont know what IMO means

i c... i thought, since these facts, i supposed, were based within a north american context.... we were talking about african slavery....

i know i posted them as facts because that is what the website said, but can u really call these facts tho? i think a lot of ppl would disagree and some scientists (not to many) would talk about the fact that race biologically does exist....

Biologically Race does exist.

As Homo sapiens we are all of the same race, the only race of humionoids on this planet.

Excellent post; there is much to review/discuss on the site.

There will always be those who would argue the statements/facts as outlined on the PBS site. In this day and age there are those who still believe the earth is flat.

Yes we are all the same race of species only differences are cultural and genetic right?

Just like dogs are all the same species but what differentiates a chihuaha from Mexico and a German Shepard is genetics que no?

I believe slavery predates race...race became highly associated with slavery because skin color was such an easy marker, people obviously viewed slaves as lesser, but the fact that they happened to be black or indigenous caused people to correlate race with slavery.

"ok but i would say that within humans biologically race does not exist..."

Could you please elaborate on your statement?

There used to be different races of humanoids on this planet, but they have all died out.

"I believe slavery predates race...race became highly associated with slavery because skin color was such an easy marker, people obviously viewed slaves as lesser, but the fact that they happened to be black or indigenous caused people to correlate race with slavery."

You're entiled to your beliefs, but this is not entirely what this PBS site is stating. There certainly is a correlation, but it's after the fact, according to the website.

QUESTION: How does one determine beliefs vs. facts? Individually or by committee?

your last question is a really good one...how do you separate beliefs vs. facts...

and how much of what we now see as historical facts are actually beliefs?

Slavery comes out of Slavic (see the similarity) however you must keep in mind that the slave trade (to the New World) was in the midst of the exploration and 'science' age in which Whites (Northern Whites) were deemed the most superior, Southern and Eastern Europeans were deemed lower, and Africans deemed lowest (just playing devil's advocate).

Slavery existed in Africa, without any regards to race, rather as a punishment for criminal activities, I again state that the marker of skin color helped to correlate race and slavery...Europeans had been told (by the church and science) that people were being enslaved for a reason AFTER the Slave Trade was initiated.

i have never understood this when people claim or infer that "race does not exist." everytime i ask for an explanation i am left alone.

to me,race does exist, it is not an illusion. the boundaries of how one will define and choose what encompasses it will vary.

i believe peeple choose to point out "illusions" in order not to face issues which represent aspects of themselves and therefore make a reason not to address issues with themselves.
