Mexico catching up with U.S. -- in weight

September 29, 2008

BY JAIME A. ZEA

MEXICO CITY -- Abraham Leon was getting a checkup when he found out he had high blood pressure and was at risk of developing diabetes.

On the spot, the 5-foot-6-inch, 240-pound lab researcher joined ''Vamos Por Un Million de Kilos'' (Let's Lose a Million Kilos), a national campaign to get Mexicans to collectively trim about 2 million pounds.

The project is one of several new efforts to fight obesity in Mexico, which is on track to catch up with the United States within a decade as one of the world's fattest countries.

Nearly half of Mexico's 110 million people are overweight.

''The longer we carry this excess weight, the more serious the problem becomes,'' said Dr. Samuel Flores Huerta, director of the Department of Community Health at Children's Hospital. ''Obesity is costing this country a lot of money.''

Mexico is working to mandate more physical education in public schools and encourage employers and unions to give workers time for exercise.

Mexican cuisine has always been high in fat and carbohydrates. But for decades, people living in small villages could not grow enough to eat a lot and had to travel long distances to gather more food. Now, as the middle class grows and more people move to cities seeking work, diets have become laden with processed and fast foods.

No surprise here.. Mexico is the second fattest country on earth. I think it has a lot to do with our eating habits.. Mexicans go out at night for some "tacos", and then they go to sleep. Food is broken down at a slower pace when asleep then when awake, hence the weight. Luckily I'm not a statistic.

Probably for city people, but most people are healthy looking in towns and ranchos.

Eh.. honestly I've been to a lot of towns and rancho's.. Both types of people walk a lot, one in the city, and one to get to places inside the town since everything is in walking distance. I think both places have their fair share of fatties.

^^I think fast food has a lot to do with it too.. Well that, plus in some cases trends are shifting to processed and prepackaged foods which contain a lot of sodium and sugar.

I don't think so. When I went to Subway and McDonalds in Mexico City And Guadalajara those places were empty. It's more expensive to actually eat fast food then to go to your nearest corner and buy a torta. In most pueblos, there are no fast food restaurants. There is just a lot of greasy food and people over eat.

I remember every summer I go and stay with my grandmother I'm always hungry. Probably because I'm used to the eating times in the U.S. Every time I wake up its already 12 PM. That means I've slept through breakfast. The next meal is at 2 PM, and starving by then. After that people wait until night to go out to eat, and is usually pozole, tacos or tostadas. People eat a lot because by that time they're hungry. Then they go to sleep a few hours later while still full.

Also depends largely on where your at.. Fast foods are becoming more predominant in the cities. Fried foods are also big time down there which is of course an obvious culprit.

Again, from the pueblos, most cities are hours away. Taking that into account, and the fact that fast food in Mexico is FAR more expensive (I'm talking about $8 for a Whopper meal. That's how much it was at the airport). People in the city may or may not have money to eat everyday at these places, but there's not a lot.

Yay lets all become fat:

By the year 2030, it is estimated that half of all Americans will be over weight.

I wonder if NAFTA has anything to do with this since Mexico now has Wal-Mart, Sam's Club, and Smart & Final stores in Mexico that sells fattening inexpensive food in bulk...

First of all, only the upper class go to the Wal-mart's and Gigantes and all of those other American chains. Shits expensive. I went to BK and they "sharged" me $8 for a Whopper meal while over here they're like $4.59. I explained this before and find that most Mexicans go out to eat at night or Cenar. They eat a shitload of either tacos, pozole, tortas, or tostadas, and then go to bed right after wards. Adding a lot of fat and carbs into the mix, and taking into account that your body processes foods slower when you're sleeping, you get overweight people. In the U.S, unlike Mexico, fast food is a much cheaper alternative than buying it and making it yourself. I think I'll go with my theory, makes the most sense.

^ He's mistaken, I've been to Ensenada in the core urban parts were there are potholes the size of moon craters and I've seen Carl's Jr., Smart & Final, Coca-Cola, Sam's Clubs, etc. in towns that looked like slums

I think the major reason is Pan dulce (along with eating more meat, especially pork) which is very popularity among the baby boomers. White flour, white sugar,Hydrolyzed or Canola oil all contribute to an unhealthy lifestyle are consistent ingredients. Another reason is at least from my own experience and parents is that exercise is never really emphasized or made an important issue. According to my folks manual labor is sufficient. The Chinese to my recent discovery have had basic non time consuming exercises that stimulate the glands and get circulation in motion for over a 1000 years. Of course when the invaders came I'm sure the indigenous people had some type of system/sports that were suffice or were just so healthy there was no need.

Mexico cannot catch up in the worst ways of the whitemans culture... for one thing.
Although, every place and area has it's drawbacks and good things too.
The Problemo , is with Mexico, is the Currency, there is no One Dollar bill, thats the whole problem.
As for the Diet, they can eat alot of fat anywhere, they work hard and eat less, so they are much healthier without as much as health care as the US as well.
So that itself speaks, mountains of books to the white culture of how smart and prestige they really are.
we all work hard to live well and die fast, with getting no where, sometimes one has to work hard , but enjoy ones own life, not as the way you are told , but as you know will get you somewhere and give you the meaning in life itself.
