Default Burning Man

Anyone going?
Anyone been?

I’m virtually going...lol
Been doing lots of research, reading forums, blogs, watching YouTube videos, it looks like a blast!!!

Black Rock City Nevada
the Playa
Aug 26 to Sept 3, 2018 gates open at midnight
Tickets are $425 plus fees and taxes
Car pass are $80 plus fees and taxes

A core part of Burning Man culture, which celebrates art, community, and self-expression, these works are feats of creativity, collaboration, technology, and critical thinking. Not just awe-inspiring installations, they become sites for gatherings, meditation, merriment, and relaxation. Then, in the event’s final days, many of the works—including the Man himself—are burned to the ground.

For people who don’t know what it is , it’s a city (Black Rock City) built by about 60,000 people all in a three week span and then taken down and leaving no trace.

You have to buy a ticket to get in 2018 the general tickets are $425 plus taxes and fees plus you have to pay an additional $80 to pass in your car plus taxes and fees.

This is an exercise in self sustaining.
You have to pack in your own food and water
It’s not a festival it’s a community created by the people in the middle of the desert .
You are expected to bring gifts. Could be things you made, your time and energy, volunteering or art.

It’s very organized. Main way of traveling within the city is by bike, no vehicles allowed.
You go in with your car, park it at your space and leave it there, no driving around
But there are mutant art cars that take you to different camps

People spend thousands of dollars preparing to go. Most sleep in tents but a lot take RVs, and campers.
You have to build your place up. Can’t just set a tent need shade. The desert in Nevada is a flat playa that is just dust and dirt, no plants , no water, no electricity, no nothing. Sometimes the wind picks up and you could have a whiteout in which case you need to shelter in place.

I forgot how to set a link otherwise I’d put one here
But go to burning man.org for more info
Especially on the map of how they lay out the city

They build a structure, a man, that is the center of of city.
Which they burn, hence burning man.
U
It seems bigger than one person can do so you learn to depend on others.
You can pay dues or volunteer to belong to a camp which is a community within the community where you share things.

Camps.
Each camp has a purpose or theme.
Hair washing. Yes have your hair washed
Showers. Yes long lines to take public showers
Orgies. LOL many come for the sex
Drinking. You bring your own cup no cups are provided as they are considered moop
Dancing. Dance in the dark with your lights glowing
Music. Different types from classical to techno blasting and blaring
Art. Interactive art is big. Art cars are outrageous

And list is only limited by your imagination.

Moop = matter out of place

You are required to take out everything you brought in.
This is community enforced and you can be ostracized for creating moop.

Wood chips are the worst kind of moop . Your vehicle is searched for moop and you can be banned for bringing in things that create moop.

This law is enforced not only by the community but also by the environmental protection community.

The org spends millions of dollars to the county, paying fees, taxes and permits, on condition that no moop is left behind.

You are asked to spend at least two hours collecting moop at the end. Everyone carries a moop bag.

There are no trash cans, your trash you deal with it

The people who go:

Technically inclined people are high on the list.
It’s like a rite of passage for the technology field. Since you have to build a city those with carpenters skills are highly regarded along with engineers.

The artist is highly regarded also. Since most of all the camps have to have eye appeal the artist is the one that does that. So it becomes a mixture of the engineer and the artist.

At night:

Many people will bring generators to light things up but the main things are battery operated LED lights.

You are required to have lights on yourself and on your bike at night for safety.

The Playa changes by night with most people sleeping in between 7am and 1pm
Sleep is handled individually since this is a 24hr city.

Staying up to watch the sunrise is something that you should experience.

If you go to YouTube (on your phone) and search for Burning Man 360, you can find virtual reality videos and you can “look around” with your phone, kinda cool.

One of my friends used to go pretty regularly, doesn't seem like my cup of tea.

p.s. normally I'd merge all your consecutive posts, but there's no one around anyway so it's moot lol

Yes you wear what you want no judgment

Nudity is common

Individuality is encouraged and expected

Well it’s over. Hope all went well for everyone and you got the burn you needed.
Now is the time for pictures and blogs. Decompression they call it when all you can talk about is burning man and how it changed your life.

They say don’t make any radical decisions after. Wait at least three weeks for anything.
