Default Developing a Healthy Sexuality

So as some of you know I am interning at a non-profit this semester. As part of my assignment I have to have a project, and the one that I decided to take on is to develop a sex education curriculum. It is a joint project so someone else is doing the contraception, STI's etc etc part. I am doing the emotional aspect. How to develop a healthy sexuality for girls, our population consists entirely of girls. It is all research based, I am doing a lot of it, it's tough because even feminist theorists disagree on a lot of issues, like desire, subjectivity and being sexually empowered. We also face restrictions because I live in the state of Texas, and some of our groups are held in schools. We are not allowed to even bring condoms, nonetheless 'encourage' a healthy sexuality.

Anyway what I came here for is to read different perspectives.

What are things you wish you knew when you were 13-17 years old?

What do you think defines a healthy sexuality?

How do you address sexuality with your daughters (if you have them) or how do you wish that schools would address it?

Any other things you think are relevant. I will update everyone on my progress, as well as post my preliminary presentation to the staff.

That it isn't a good idea to jerk off into a tube sock (or a box).

Understanding that porno isn't real life for most people (except for Nelio and ChicanoDan who routinely take el palo from los negros).

It starts at home (the good and the bad). I'm not sure how much school can influence.

Jealous Bitch...

I'll answer later.. I need to gather my thoughts on this so as to answer in as sincere a manner as that in which the question was asked.

I wish I knew how to handle a situation that I wasn't comfortable with as far as advances from boys. I wish that I knew about safe sex. I wish I had a responsible adult, outside of my home, to talk to about these things.

I couldn't ask my mom about sex or anything really, cuz she'd fly off the handle and think that I was up to no good. So, unfortunately I had to learn some things on my own. Had I a better and trusting relationship with my mom, I believe I would have had a better understanding of sex. What to expect. How to make the right decisions. How to protect myself.
Agreeing with Cal, a healthier sexuality starts at home. So, perhaps educating the parents how to talk to their kids about sex would also be good.

If your about teaching a healthy sexuality, then it starts at home, or at least the OPTION to go home and ask a parent or family member without the freaking out. You have to break that "stigma" Maybe 2 generations from now it will be different since things are changing, but not so much in the heavy/highly religious families.

I think a lot of these high school'esk type of movies like super bad, ect could possibly help out, sure they are funny, and sure they are usually a over blown scenerio, but they arent completely far off, bad thing, those are r-rated movie.

Basically censorship is not a friend.

What defines a healthy sexuality, not being ashamed of sex. Not being ashamed of having it or wanting it or hell even thinking about it. Studies have shown women think/want it just as much as men, yet the stigma still says its wrong. I have worked around plenty of females who talk about it openly, its funny to me to hear it from the other side of the isle and i usually say more power to them.

But you still have bullshit articles like this one:
http://movies.yahoo.com/photos/good-...064303664.html

Its hollywood, actors are supposed to GROW. The only one that fits the title of the article is Lindsay Lohan. And even then, she is only bad because she is a fucking mess, not that she is a whore and a druggy and an alcky.

But, the slide show/article makes it seem as though because theses actresses grew up they can not take on heavier roles. Hell they went far back to when Jodie Foster was a teen, uptight much?

I hate teenagers. But whats your point about having 2 teenage kids? Does that give you some kind of special insight? And lastly, are your teens girls? if so, are they hot?

It is tricky to teach someone things that are against something so personal like their religion. I am trying to incorporate in my curriculum that teenage sexuality is very natural and nothing to be ashamed about, and explain why they feel the way they do, hormones, brain development etc.

There is this documentary called Sext Up Kids! I watched it and got some good ideas about how to try and combat porn and real life sex. Our groups also address body image and media's image of women, we show them photoshop, etc. We don't touch porn much though.

We do try to teach the girls assertive communication and how to say no effectively, I will reinforce it in the sex curriculum though.

All of these are great points, we try to give the teengirls reliable resources, so they don't just experiment, google or find something on yahoo answers, we also have a curriculum on mother daughter relationships because these are essential

Our organization does hold parent workshops. Yet a lot of the girls in our specific program come and go, they are also all from different schools so it is difficult to reach the parents.

Yes the media plays such an important role, I have addressed a lot of these points in previous answers, but thank you for your response you make very valid points.

Healthy sexuality is really simple.People tend to blow shit out of porportion when it deals fucking with their own set of ideals and values.I hope you make a difference in these kids lives..for some of them you will be the only caring or educated adult they come across that gives a shit about them.Good Luck!
Thanks, and well you don't have to have teen kids to share in this particular thread. However, I am reading an AMAZING book written for mothers of teen girls, it is called The Secret Lives of Teen Girls, I highly, highly recommend it, since you are parenting teens.

I would like to know how you approach sexuality with your daughters, I know that you don't want to because of backlash, but I find the answer worthwhile, whatever it may be.

Combat porn and real life sex?

But as others have been saying how people shouldn't be ashamed of their sexuality and how to say no and about consent, shit like that

Well it is more of like raising awareness that the sex they see in the movies and porn is not real life.

That is not what real life sex is like. And that is not how women like to be treated or that is not just what women are for.

I have an 7th grader tell me in group that she was called porn star by a boy her age. Not slut. whore, hoe etc, but pornstar.

But yes consent and not being ashamed are very important, thanks!

There are plenty of times that sex is just like in the porn movies, if ya have the right girl. The spitting in the face is a little much.

My sister (a typical liberal psuedo-feminist) told me that porn was distorting my perception of what 'real' women look like.
I told that silly bitch I watch "amateur" porn that casts "real" women.

I know they're "real" because i actually recognized a girl from one of those movies, who works at the grocery store I go to.

I agree, but we don't need to tell the boys and girls in middle school that. Once we have laid out the foundation for a healthy sexuality. Then when they are adults and find a willing partner then they may experiment all they want.
