Default Black Woman Pretends to be White - Job Offers Skyrocket

Yolanda Spivey is an African American woman, she was unemployed for two years, and had applied for over 300 jobs to no avail — despite a having a decade’s worth of experience in the insurance industry, and a college degree. Spivey wrote in Techyville that as an experiment, she first started “declining to state” her ethnicity on Monster.Com’s Diversity Questionnaire, but that had no effect. Spivey then created a fake profile, with identical information, except that her fictitious job candidate was white, and was aptly named “Bianca White” (Bianca means “white” in Spanish). Suddenly, responses from employers came pouring in.

David Pakman discusses Spivey’s discovery, and also makes a surprising revelation about his own little experiment with ethnicity on The David Pakman Show.

White privilege exists, yes. I'm willing to bet the show host himself has benefited from it, too, by blending in and identifying with mainstream white Americans for most of his life spent in the States. Mexicans, and not necessarily the Louis CK types, also use these tricks to get ahead. How many actors have changed their names to make it in show biz, how many have taken advantage of their more European features to disassociate themselves, and how many have lied about their country of origin to avoid discrimination? It happens on the other side of the border, it happened in the American southwest one hundred years ago, and it's probably going to keep happening to some extent in the future.

Lol, that was my same reaction.
Her name was either Blanca or they meant to say Bianca means White in ITALIAN!

I find this article to be untrue.

I am not saying that it doesn't happen but the name Yolanda Spivey doesn't tell a potential employer that she is Black and it's illegal to ask.

I have known a few White and Brown women named Yolanda. I work with a White woman named Yolanda. I've never known a Black woman named Yolanda.

I don't know any black women named Yolanda, but to me, it still sounds like a black name.
And I probably wouldnt be alone in that assessment. And thats all a perspective employer needs, is an idea in their head.
And an idea in someones head is not illegal.

Have you worked in Human Resources, KoolArrow? Have you been the part of a hiring process?

I am sure that most of us on this site have last names that are Spanish. Does anyone ever feelthat their last name has hurt them with potential employers?

I don't know what that has to do with this discussion. But yes, I have been part of the hiring process. I was the hiree. Also been part of the firing process as well
Do you know a lot of black people?

How would anyone know for sure? Its not like an employer is going to call them up and tell them, we're not hiring you and it's based on your last name.

Uh huh.

Of course I do. What does my knowing Black people have to do with anything?

I asked if they feel that their last name has hurt them. Of course no one knows for sure why they were passed up for a job other than education or qualifications.

Sorry, I don't have any valid thoughts about the working world or the hiring process. I have a spotty employment record and a very modest education.

What do I know?

Carry on...

She was asked to declare her race when creating a profile for Monster. So the employers looking through her profile/resume do have access to her race information, at least that is the way I understand it.

that part sounds fishy (the one part whats her name up there was right about) Does Monster actually ask for your race when you sign up with them?

Doesn't sound far fetched in a world where employers are supposedly asking for your facebook pages and your credit history.

I would go based off of the people who are applying over people in HR, simply because to HR people are just a number. Especially with the online process going on these days.
