i used to not tip..but then my friend yelled at me and told me that in the food industry ppl mostly get their money from tips and you should ALWAYS TIP DOUBLE TAX and if they give good service give them something extra.....so in order not to deal with her speech i just tip.

I tip the standard 15% unless the service is bad. If they suck I give them 10% in small coins to show my displeasure. If I get any extra things for free I give the waiter/waitress an extra 5% tip (20% total). For instance, once a barkeep let me try extra shots of different tequila shots on the house. Even after I tip him extra I am still ahead because I didn't pay for the shots.

Also, I consciously tip because I am Mexican and I want the staff to respect whatever Mexican comes in the door next time around. I want them to associate good things from Mexicans. That's how I perceive it anyways.

One time I got very poor service at a Mexican restaurant in Seattle and I left 2 pennies as a tip.

You don't tip?

No - I don't believe in it.
EDDIE
You don't believe in tipping?
MR. BLUE
You know what these chicks make? They make shit.
MR. PINK
Don't give me that. She don't make enough money, she can quit.
(Mr. Blonde laughs.) EDDIE
I don't even know a fucking Jew who'd have the balls to say that. Let me just get this straight. You don't ever tip, huh?
MR. PINK
I don't tip because society says I have to. Alright, I mean I'll tip if somebody really deserves a tip, if they really put forth the effort, I'll give 'em something extra, but I mean this tipping automatically is for the birds.
(Eddie laughs.) I mean as far as I'm concerned they're just doing their job.
MR. BLUE
Hey, this girl was nice.
MR. PINK
She was OK - but she wasn't anything special.
MR. BLUE
What's special, take you in the back and suck your dick?
(They laugh.) EDDIE
I'd go over 12% for that.
MR. PINK
Hey Look, I ordered coffee, right? Now we've been here a long fuckin time, and she's only filled my cup three times. When I order coffee, I want it filled six times
MR. BLONDE
Six times? Well, you know, what if she's too fucking busy?
MR. PINK
Words "too fucking busy" shouldn't be in a waitress' vocabulary.
EDDIE
Excuse me, Mr. Pink - the last fucking thing you need's another cup of coffee.
MR. PINK
Jesus Christ - I mean these ladies aren't starving to death. They make minimum wage. You know, I used to work minimum wage. And when I did, I wasn't lucky enough to have a job society deemed tip-worthy.
MR. BLUE
You don't care they're counting on your tips to live?
(Mr. Pink rubs two of his fingers together.) MR. PINK
You know what this is? It's the world's smallest violin playing just for the waitresses.
MR. WHITE
You don't have any idea what you're talking about. These people bust their ass. This is a hard job.
MR. PINK
So's working at McDonald's, but you don't feel the need to tip them, do you? Why not? They're servin ya food. But no, society says don't tip these guys over here, but tip these guys over here. That's bullshit.
MR. WHITE
Waitressing is the number one occupation for female noncollege graduates in this country. It's the one job basically any woman can get and make a living on. The reason is because of their tips.
MR. PINK
(pauses) Fuck all that.
(They all laugh.) MR. BROWN
Jesus Christ!
MR. PINK
Hey, I'm very sorry that the government taxes their tips. That's fucked up. That ain't my fault. It would appear that waitresses are just one of the many groups the government fucks in the ass on a regular basis. You show me a paper says the government shouldn't do that, I'll sign it. Put it to a vote, I'll vote for it. But what I won't do is play ball. And this non-college bullshit you're giving me, I got two words for that: "Learn to fuckin type." Cause if you're expecting me to help out with the rent, you're in for a big fuckin' surprise.
MR. ORANGE
Hey - he's convinced me. Give me my dollar back.

It is a big misconception that tips are to "punish" and reward" they should never be used for that. This is the person's livelihood. Everyone had a bad day now and then, maybe you came into work one day not feeling well, but they're not going to cut your pay in half for all the hours you worked because of that. It is very impolite to tip less than double tax.

That's how I tip....double the tax. If they have done more than they had to I will give them more than that about 20-30%

For me, the deciding factor on that is whether or not the place was too busy for the waiter/waitress to handle. In that case, I can see them not being able to give the best service.

But I've been to places where there was hardly anyone there and they let us sit there for 20 minutes without even asking if we wanted something to drink... I mean come on now!! Would you tip that waiter well for that chit! Hell no!! We walked out when the waiter finally came to ask us what we wanted.....

i leave tips depending on the service... my rule is dont let my drink get empty! if it gets half way they loose a quarter..if they wait for me to tell them i need a refill ill deduct $0.50 if i dont get any condiments that i ask for within 3mins they'll loose a dollar (unless its busy). most of the time i leave a $5 tip for good service, if the service is excellant $10. most dont get more than $3.50 though.

I dont think you can call it a "misconception" when the majority feel that a generous tip is commensurate with satisfactory service. I'd say that even most people working in food service feel this way.
Thats why waiters and waitresses work hard to keep customers happy. They know that above average service yields above average tips (as a rule).

You're right about it being their livlihood, so they should take their job serious if they want to make a living at it. It's just common sense.

Everyone has "bad days" at work and if someone consistently performs poorly at their job, they get canned. A "bad day" should never be taken out on a customer and if it is, a service worker should expect to see that reflected in their tip (or lack thereof).

Poor tipping is very impolite?

Well, so is shitty service.

it's called gratuity for a reason. No one is obligated to tip, so service workers should (and I think most do) know this and act accordingly.

I tip...

but once we ate at this very nice some-what fancy resteraunt..I think they took one look at us and assumed we werent worth their time...It was one of the worst times at a resteraunt i've ever had.

I am mexaicn, My fiance is Filipino he likes to wear baseball hats and i was sick that day so i didnt really get all "dressed up" but!!! * Little did they know my Fiance is a Manager at the partnering restaurant for the same company!!!*

Well the lady passed by our table more times then i could count and never bothered to ask how we were doing or if we needed anything...I didnt have anything to drink for 10 freakin minutes because she never bothered to drag her ass out of the kitchen...

Needless to say we left her a little note on the back of our receipt reminding her that looks can be decieving and she only got the 6 dollar tip that we left her because we didnt have change or else she would've gotten a dam dollar!!!

We never went back there again...

I do like to tip though because i wouldn't want to keep ignorant people like that lady thinking that because of or skin pigment that we dont tip "appropriately"...and next time someone mexican comes in after me i expect them to be treated with a great deal of politness and urgency

Just curious how you managed to have six dollars without having a single dollar
