FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
NEWS CONFERENCE
Sunday, April 9, 2006
12:00 p.m.
Our Lady of Guadalupe Church
710 S. Sultana Ave., Ontario, CA 91761

Louise Corales, whose 14 year-old son, Anthony Soltero, died on April 1 after committing suicide, will speak to the community and ask for a prayer for her son this Sunday, following the 11:00 a.m. mass at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church in Ontario, California.

Eighth grader Anthony Soltero shot himself through the head on Thursday, March 30, after the assistant principal at De Anza Middle School told him that he was going to prison for three years because of his involvement as an organizer of the April 28 school walk-outs to protest the anti-immigrant legislation in Washington. The vice principal also forbade Anthony from attending graduation activities and threatened to fine his mother for Anthonys truancy and participation in the student protests.

Anthony was learning about the importance of civic duties and rights in his eighth grade class. Ironically, he died because the vice principal at his school threatened him for speaking out and exercising those rights, Ms. Corales said today. I want to speak out to other parents, whose children are attending the continuing protests this week. We have to let the schools know that they cant punish our children for exercising their rights.

Anthonys death is likely the first fatality arising from the protests against the immigration legislation being considered in Washington, D.C. Anthony, who was a very good student at De Anza Middle School in the Ontario-Montclair School District, believed in justice and was passionate about the immigration issue. He is survived by his mother, Louise Corales, his father, a younger sister, and a baby brother.

Ms. Corales will speak to the community after mass on Sunday, April 9, 2006 at 12:00 p.m. at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church. She will ask for a prayer for Anthony, whose funeral and burial are scheduled for Monday, April 10 in Long Beach, where he was born.

my mom saw this article on Pocho a few minutes ago and had me come read it. she was wondering if it was true or not so i got on here to see if anyone had posted n e thing about it...

this is so sad, the schools teach us about civil rights and standing up for what we believe in! and for what?! to be shot down as soon as we stand up! the schools are set to a ciriculum of what they are supposed to follow, and then they go against their own teachings! what a load of hypacritical bullshit!
oh what a wonderful society we are living in today.....

He was weak and suing someone because of that is very white.

He should have told her that he was glad to go to prison for his beliefs because he would not be like a white American(most) that would sell their own mother to be part of the establishment.

As I look back I am glad I had the parents I did, they sure taught me well. A threat like that would never have phased me.

Not all 14 year old kids are raised with such thick skin. Some parents feel children should be able to be children without having to "grow up so fast".

Even more reason for parents to educate themselves and their children on the pros and cons of their actions. Although I don't condone the administrators method of intimidation, the childs mother is stating that schools can not punish students for exercising their rights when in fact that is inaccurate and different school districts and states do have various consequences for such walkouts and are enforcing them more as these protests continue.

It has nothing to do with thick skin, it has to do with learning that there are consequences for your actions. A 14 year old is at the start of manhood and needs to learn to be a man and not coddled.

A 14 year old is not really a child any longer, that line of thought is what has made Americans soft and unable to accept the harshness of the reality we live in.
They cry rudeness and meaness when they are told facts, they shift their failures to the acts of others instead of taking responsibility for the choices they have made. Most now even believe that options only exist when there are favorable choices...

Bottom line is that this person would have killed himself someother time in life when the going got rough.

With all due respect to the family and to yourself, just exactly what is it that he did for the raza by taking his life? Attention? The wrong attention. This young man acted out of fear and the lack of knowledge of what his rights were. This incident is not a casualty of the cause, but a tragedy that possibly could have been prevented.

Default Is there ever an end?

This troubles me. For one teachers are supposed to guide the youth. They are supposed to embrace students taking life by the horns and exercising what they are being taught. From the sounds of it, he was a brave young man. My heart goes out to him, another Chicano standing up for his people. That teacher has the blood of a young man on his hands now. He will have to live with putting the boy's family through hell.

Our first teachers are our parents. Too many times parents have failed and tossed their responsibilites onto the educational system, expecting for teachers to do their jobs for them. If we're gong to blame someone for this young mans demise place blame where it truly belongs. As someone mentioned earlier, this young man with his inability to handle lifes pressures, would have acted on suicide sooner or later. As I see it both the family and educational structure failed this child along with anyone who was involved in this young mans life.
