Default Multiple Surnames

How many of you have and go by them?

Any theories as to why Latinos in general use more than one last name? What is the surname limit?

I ask because I notice some of y'all go by multiple surnames. I only go by one.

I noticed when I was in high school the "born here" Latinos only went by one last name, while the ones from their original countries went by two or more last names.
**I know this may not be the case elsewhere.

The reason latinos have two name is because in Latino countries you use your paternal surname and maternal surname. So if you go live in Mexico you will have to use one of your mom's last name and your dad's last name.

Well duh... my real question is why two surnames? Where and when and for what reason did they start using the two?

I know I could Google this, but I don't feel like it LOL

Why do Americans only use one last name?
Is just tradition or culture.

I only use one, although my mom's maiden name is my legal middle name. Although I have heard my mom say that if we were still in Mexico, we would have used both. Not sure why though.

putting your mom's maiden name as your middle name is wrong.(that's what my parents did)

In mexico it's your dad's last name first, then your mom's. Which would be wrong here because you would be going by your mom's last name(middle name would get dropped) Not a big deal for some but can be a big deal if you ever plan on getting documentation in Mexico(property, citizenship, etc)

the best way I've seen it is with a dash. but that creates it's own set of problems. mainly if both your parents have super long last names. And if you are a woman, you'd probably another hypen to it if you don't want to change your last name for the poor bastard.

Gutierrez-Hernandez-Martinez

....then you imagine if you have long first and middle names on top of all that? You'd be a walking stereotype lol

I haven't changed my last name to my husbands. I don't want to loose my dad's last name since I have no brothers to carry on our last name. And I also have my mom's last name which I love because my mother's last name has a lot of history... i told my husband I would hyphen his last name, but that I'd keep my dad's last name as my first last name. Lol
Yea he wasn't having that....

With living together being so common, the only real way to say you are married is to take your husbands last name. Just on observation.

Maybe for women...

For men, a ring is usually good enough.

Exactly and not that expensive shit either just in case things go bad. Not going to spend more than 700 yucks on some ring.
