Question Making a Music Video...

A'ight...

I ain't got shit except a basic computer, scanner, and a basic digital camera...

But here's the deal...

A homie of mine is a rapper and we wanna make a decent (low budget) music video.
I ain't got no experience, no clue, nuttin... on how to do this. Anyone got any ideas as
to what I would need to get started? Ain't too much funds... this is just a beginner project.
If everything comes out good, and we sell a few DVD's, we'll make some feria to reinvest
into this. The idea is to film him at the club... doing the whole club scene thing, also record
some local lowriders at like a picnic/cookout kinda deal, and also at the local taqueria.
LOL... yeah, it's a local landmark.

I wanna do this all digital... computer (cuz supposedly that's the way to do it.)
So what would be a basic digital camcorder I would need. What computer programs
would I need for the editing, and adding the music to the video???

Anyhelp???

what kind of computer are you going to be editing on or have?

If u have mac, IMovie is a descent thing to edit on for starters. FinalCutPro is better.

If your working in windows ur more limited. Adobe Premier is what ur going to be using more then likely.

As far as camera goes, i say use a mini dv cam, they work great and the quality is very good. The more professional a camera u can get get. 3CCD cameras are professional cameras. If u can get one of those, do it.

Now as far as shooting. U have a basic theme, but with one camera only it is going to be a little harder. Especially at the club, because u want different angles a 3 camera or even 2 camera shoot would be really choice, but u probably dont have that type of set up.

When shooting you have your basic shots u want to get.
*wide
*medium
*close up
*extreme close up

Ya kind of want one camera strictly for a wide shot of the stage only.

U could get away with having a roaming camera. Which could get the other shots as well as crowd shots.

Now i assume at the picnic it wont be a concert, just a picnic with rides? Well that is a bit easier, u only need one camera.

Oh and also if ya can have the audio through one of the cameras it would be great. Like straight out of the mic sound, not a overall sound with the crowd and all.

good advice nelio. I'd like to start out with knowing what your budget is. I'd recommend a cinealta package(HD) or 35mm panavision package but I am guessing you don't have that type of money

No but seriously, a good estimate would be helpful so that I can give you helpful recommendations.

yes but how much money are you working with? 1k? 5k?

depending on your budget I might recommend rentals versus buying equipment. Otherwise get a cheap O miniDV camera, install some video editing software(I'd recommend sony vegas) and you should be good to go.

that should be enough. I would suggest you rent a good 3CCD camcorder. Should run you maybe 200 for the weekend. You should have it shot by then. If you want to buy and feel you can't complete the project on the weekend, then get a decent miniDV camera.($500-1k)

as far as shooting:
Plan it out. This is very important. Come up with an idea of how you want it to look. Plan the shoots and go shoot it. You shouldn't make it all up on that day because the limited planning will really show on the final project. The better you plan it out, the better your project.

Get plenty of shots. Record everything a few times. Have the song for the music video at hand and play it when you are shooting. It will help you with syncing and timing.

What he said. I don't want to see a crappy Chicano Rap video like I been seeing the past few years. Many of it, you can tell was not planned just by the look of it.

Orale... I'm dumb when it comes to software...

But I'm guessing I can buy this at Best Buy??? Any idea on the price range???

And with this software, can I add stuff to the video?? Like the homie had an
idea of pulling a gun (yes it's rap) and like shooting at the camera... we thought
it'd be tight to make it look like if bullets hit the screen... know what I mean?

True... it's gonna be obvious we're low budget balling on the video, but we
still want it to look clean. Simple, not way to over did. Like I said, this is just
the beginning. We're actually looking now at renting a helicopter to get a
shot of a party at a local hangout spot. Only $50 an hour... we're looking
at getting one for 1 or 2 hours tops...

And for the camcorder again... those "Mini DV" camcorders... are those the ones
that have the slots for the SD Memory Cards??? I know a regular digital camera
doesn't record at camcorder quality, but is the quality excellent on a Mini DV??

I don't think so. Best bet is to purchase online.

The sony movie studio is like 80-100 bucks. Very basic editor and aimed at consumers. It will most likely get the job done for you. If you are serious about editing, then get the production suite. This is a professional level application and will run you about $500. I would quote you exact numbers but the website is being updated at the moment.

I would advise you against pirated software for the reason that you run a high risk at getting viruses and spyware. NOt worth the risk IMHO.

Yeah just press the handy, dandy "bullet hitting the screen" effect on your control panel....

Just playing, lol. Nah but now you are dealing with special FX shots that are quite complicated. Special fx shots are not something editors are designed to do.

To do the effect you are describing you most likely need 3d software and compositing software. You need the 3d software to create the bullet and the glass shatter effect. Then you need the compositing software to overlay the bullet on top of the video footage and add any lighting, smoke and atmospheric effects to make it realistic. This is a very time consuming and complicated process.

If It were me, I'd shoot around it(no pun intended). I'd take the video footage, import into after effects and add a "flash" effect to simulate the flash you would see if a gun was fired. I'd place it over the gun barrel so that it looks like the gun is producing the flash, then add a gun shot effect and it will look pretty good. Not as cool as something created with a 3D application but it will look good enough for our non-budget production.

Alternatively you could also recreate this flash effect in your editor but it won't be as nice if you recreated it in after effects(or other compositor)

Bottom line, since we are not working with a top level, hollywood production and budget, we do the best we can with what we have. Or come up with ways around it so that it looks good.

Some camera's Mini DV included have cards that go to them, but they are not really for shooting on. There are new professional HD panasonic cameras comming out that look pretty fucking sweet that shoot on cards instead of tapes or dvds, lkooks cool, but they are pretty fucking expensive.

Mini DV is the cameras that shoot on the smallest tapes out there. And yes it is damn good quality.

This is what i want, when i get the money going. I go with this because i am used to the type is lenses now with shooting with news cameras. Only thing is i wouldnt mind a auto focus option.
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/produc...ional_HDV.html
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/produc...Camcorder.html

I not to much on HD, but its because i have no experience in it at all.

And yeah, Sj is right about the bullet effects. U may be able to do something in Adobe After effects, but you would need to know how to use it and it would be very time consuming with that.

He is also right when he says shoot to what you have and dont try to over do things. It is nice when ya can do it, but really the simple stuff usually looks better, then trying to do something that might not look right. When ya get the money to spend on it, then u can do that effect.

If anything, and u can get a way to get a bullet proof glass, then put the camera behind it and shoot at the glass, then u dont need an effect.

Yeah... music video's gonna be for Riddler... and the song is off his new CD
that was released 07/07/07. And before you go getting your panties all up in a
bunch... I done asked the homie to get me a copy of his CD for you... and yes,
autographed. He's still rappin independant, but maybe soon he'll get a record deal.
My other homie (that used to rap with Riddler) got a deal with Univision, but
ended up losing it due to a murder charge...

I know I know I know... I don't hang out with the nicest of crowds... LOL...

And on the serio side... mad thanks to SJ, Nelio, & Tecpa...

if it is his first video, just keep it simple, nothing fancy. save the funds for the next vid. Doing special effects in videos doesnt always look right.

Damn skippy...

We low budget balling but gotta keep it clean...

We know his video ain't gonna be on MTV or nuttin like that. Main thing we're
shooting for is to probably play it at some clubs, at lowrider shows, and toss
it on the web. Get his name out.

i dont know where but i am sure if ya search u will be able to find BLANK BULLETS that way u can get the mnuzzle flash as well from the gun, if ya choose to go that way. Wont be the bullet hitting the screen, but u can get a close up of it.

Like get a close up of his face as he squezzes the trigger, then get a tight shot of him actually squeezing the trigger and then a shot of the gun as it fires and the muzzle explodes, all in slow motion, would be great. Or at the least i can see it in my head, might take a few tries though.

Damn skippy... Now I ain't thought of that... but that's a killer idea right there...

I'll have to look into getting blanks...

We got a few legal & clean guns we're gonna use for the video...

I'll be getting blanks for several types of guns...

also if ya get all those shots, u can split them up with like a few frames of black inbetween, kind of like each new shots is split up by a blink of the eye. Like say someone was looking up at the guy and when they blink new shot, until it sequences to seeing the muzzle blast.

i am idea man, but sometimes it takes a while. As for directing, it just depends on what is done.

take this for instance. Whack fucking idea a classmate came up with. No one wanted to do it, he just pulled something out of his ass last minute. I found it was fucking funny and opted to shoot it. Of course i see what i could have done to better it in hind sight, but still not bad for what it was. Basically no real planning. I mean there was somewhat of a plan, but my main actor who was this really skinny tatted guy backed out of it and wouldnt take it a little more serious, so i had to go with me being the main actor:
