Default Women Make Movies

www.wmm.com is a website where you can find films about women by women. They have an extensive catalog which you can search by subject.

Here is more info and interesting facts:

Women Make Movies was founded more than 30 years ago to address the under-representation and misrepresentation of women in media.

In 2011, women comprised 18% of all directors, executive producers, producers, writers, cinematographers, and editors working on the top 250 domestic grossing films. This represents an increase of 2 percentage points from 2010 and an increase of 1 percentage point from 1998.

Women accounted for 5% of directors working on the top 250 films in 2011, a decrease of 2 percentage points from 2010 and approximately half the percentage of women directors working in 1998.

In Academy Award history, four female filmmakers have been nominated for best director (Lina Wertmuller-1977, Jane Campion-1994, and Sofia Coppola-2004, Kathryn Bigelow - 2010), but only Kathryn has won.

So check out the website and watch something about women by women.

Two words: Tank Girl

On a serious note, I'll probably see Mosquita y Mari (which is made by a Chicana director which I can't find on that site you posted. It's a movie about two Chicana high school girls. Was in Sundance in 2012 and was in a bing commercial.) sometime this week.

I've been wanting to see that; you don't see to many Mexican-American movies dealing with LGBT issues, or LGBT movies starring ethnic minorities, and me being both...

Yeah you should watch it

Edited to add I visited the mosquita y mari facebook page, and found a link to this movie:

It doesn't star Mexican Americans but it does star Asian Americans. Looks good.

For a long time, LGBT film and television were dominated by white homosexual men, and even today you'll have to look hard to see more than the occasional racial minority sidekick. However, you have a handful of producers dedicated to portraying people of colors and of lesbian, bisexual, and transsexual individuals, mostly indie films, so that's something to look forward to. If you're interested, you can check out a few of the films shown at Outfest Fusion 2013. Two films that deal with Mexican-Americans and homosexuality would be Homeboy, a documentary, and El Abuelo, though I haven't gotten to either, yet. If Asian-American cinema fascinate you, White Frog would be another, and hey, Harry Shum Jr. is in it, if you needed more motivation.

Either way, I now have something else to keep me occupied this summer.

what is enough female movie directors? Or a proportional amount? Maybe most women suck at directing movies? If they've had 30 years to make strides in the industry, what does it say? Are movie studios more bent on oppressing girls than making the best movies they can?

Hmm, I've actually have never even thought about the fact that women were under represented in the movie making industry.

Could it be that the movie making industry is mostly male dominated because women do not seem as interested in being a part of it but more being actresses in movies or television shows?

I see more of the females being drawn to being directors, producers, writers etc. on sitcoms more often then movies. But again, that is just what I have observed. No research has been done on my part haha.

It's like directing is the male secretary version in Hollywood.
I dont think AP is ranting that there is not enough ,but rather ,now there is now a niche in the movie industry for Women.

Theres a link for movies!
Yes, exactly!

I don't know it is a complicated issue, just like any other field. For example teaching, there are a lot of female teachers but more male principals etc, etc.

It is like asking why is the ratio of latino and black college graduates not proportionate to that of whites.

There are many factors that influence that, I am not going to sit here and say it is just sexism, although I believe it plays a part. It starts early though, girls being socialized and educated away from management positions.

okay, I was getting worried there lol

it's been my experience that women are represented quite well in the editing field. Some of the Editors I look up to the most, are women. My favorite directors have used or are currently using women editors. So in this area of filmmaking, I think women are represented quite well.

I'd say that they are represented in the most important part of the filmmaking process. Some of the great films would not be what they are, if it weren't for the female editors behind them.

lol, you are quite the optimist, SJ. I am glad you give praise where it belongs.

On a bit unrelated note, have you ever heard of the Bechdel test?

But is it really?

Could it be they may be "underrepresented" because they do not initially go for that career? Plenty probably start as artresses then go to producer/directors.

A lot of actresses out there are producing and some directing.

The next question is, unless your in the movie making industry how many really care who is the director? Once they have a dozen good movies under their belt you get the rep for being a good director. Putting out a movie doesnt mean your worth a damn, male or female.

Just an observation I have made. I personally never go see a movie based on who directed it, but by how the trailer has interested me.

Why are women not striving for those positions though? Or are they striving and not being able to achieve them?

I don't watch movies often. And many times I go because of the trailer, but I do have a favorite director. Christopher Nolan.

However we are detaching from the purpose of the thread. The thread is to celebrate and promote the female directors out there who are making movies about women. If you are interested in that you can search the documentaries on the Women Makes Movies Database.

Yes. One of my friends(male) posted about it a while back on facebook and we were trying to figure out films that might pass it.

I wonder how many of the films distributed by that website you posted actually pass it. I'd expect 100% or it's a failure, lol.
