Patch may treat low sex drive in women
BY JOHN DORSCHNER jdorschner@MiamiHerald.com In the latest attempt to find a treatment for women with low sexual desire, a South Miami-Dade pharmaceutical company is working with Procter & Gamble to develop a drug-bearing patch using testosterone. Noven Pharmaceuticals has announced it has entered into a global agreement with Procter & Gamble to develop and market the patch to treat what is technically known as Hypoactive Sexual Desire Disorder (HSDD) in women. The patch, which still has to go through steps for regulatory approval, could help some women, particularly those near menopause with low testosterone levels, said Amanda Richards-Bullock, an obstetrician-gynecologist at the University of Miami. But many others suffering from low sexual desire will probably have to look elsewhere for treatment, said Richards-Bullock, who is preparing to start a clinic at UM that would treat women with the disorder, particularly those with a physical cause. ''People have been looking for treatment for years,'' said Richards-Bullock, but there appears to be no single solution. In some women, the cause may be psychological, while in others it could be physical. Women, particularly those who are post-menopausal with restricted blood flow around their sexual organs, could benefit from Viagra, the Pfizer drug which so successfully opens up blood vessels in the male sexual organ. In the deal announced late Wednesday, Noven grants P&G an exclusive worldwide license to a testosterone patch to treat HSDD, as well as potential next-generation patches in the same category. P&GP will fund clinical development costs and will be responsible for any regulatory filings and marketing applications associated with the licensed products, as applicable. The patch being used employs Noven's DOT Matrix technology, which uses smaller patches to deliver more drug. Testosterone, a hormone generally associated with men, is also found in women, said Richards-Bullock. It's not clear why it has a role in female sexual desire, but a lack of the hormone has clearly been shown to cause a decrease in desire. http://www.miamiherald.com/business/story/651496.html
