Default Looking for a Maquahuitl

Hello everyone!

My name is Chris and I just ran across this place. I was wondering if anyone knew were you can buy a Maquahuitl? I've found some online but they cost upwards of $500. Maybe some independent shops in Mexico City have some? I'll be visiting there soon anyhow so if anyone has a heads up on where to look? I'm a bit of an antique weapons collector and I don't think my collection will be complete until I have this destructive weapon from my homeland!

Thanks in advance for any help!

Maquahuitl, a weapon so simple in design, yet everyone charges a lot for it. To be honest, there is someone who make them only for himself or for danza groups around the LA area, not sure if he'll sell them, but not sure what his name is. The only thing I can recommend is keep an eye out on danza groups & if you see a dancer that has one, ask him who made it & if there is any way to contact him.

When one collects ancient weapons, they usually want working ones. Does the ones the Danza groups use, are they in working order, like an original one?

All indigenous made things of that size are going to cost. I know at a few pow wows i have been too, i saw some lances i wanted to buy, but they were almost 200 bucks is not more.

Yes, simple weapon, but the materials are to make them and making them by hand, instead of machine made, thats were the cost comes in.

I think the guy has the ability, but he didn't want to use obsidian since... well... it's sharp so he used black painted wood instead.

Most maquahuitl are for show. Even the ones that have the obsidian on it.

Sometimes ya just have to go with a replica when non are made anymore.

There have been times i wanted to take up black smithing to create me a japanese sword.

i saw a special on weapons of the maya and the guy was showing the host how to chip and make edges on obsidian blades. Takes plenty of time and skill.

Unless he went back in time to save the last macuatuitl (along with the last tepoztopilli) before the 1884 fire in Madrid, Spain, there is no way to get an antique of these types of weapons.

Along with them being made out of wood, they don't really last that long.

For some reason this thread reminded me of this scene. Instead of a 12 gauge it would be a Maquahuitl!

Thnx. Thats exactly what I was wondering. I was thinking who in the hell would have an authentic one stored away somewhere?
