Default Dumbest festival Ever? (Tomatina festival from Spain)

I believe so, what a waste of food. Especially nutritious jitomates. It'll be kind of funny to attend this festival and paint some rocks red or let the bulls lose on the crowd.

quick description

La Tomatina is a food fight festival held on the last Wednesday of August each year in the town of Buñol in the Valencia region of Spain. Tens of thousands of participants come from all over the world to fight in a brutal battle where more than one hundred metric tons of over-ripe tomatoes are thrown in the streets.

The week-long festival features music, parades, dancing, and fireworks. On the night before the tomato fight, participants of the festival compete in a paella cooking contest.

Approximately 20,000,000 tourists come to the tomato fight, multiplying by several times Buñol's normal population of 9,000. There is limited accommodation for people who come to La Tomatina, and thus many participants stay in Valencia and travel by bus or train to Buñol, about 38 km outside the city. In preparation for the dirty mess that will ensue, shopkeepers use huge plastic covers on their storefronts in order to protect them from the carnage.

In my opinion it is cool and entertaining. Funny you should metioned this, a very close friend told me a couple months ago that he would like to visit Spain specially for this festival. And now that a family member wed a spaniard we might actually go.

I think it'd be really fun... all day food fight.

i saw a documentary about this and it was my understanding that these tomatoes were going to spoil anyways because there's an excess of tomatoes.

if there was a shortage of tomatoes, i don't think they would be doing this.

I don't see the point, and I don't really care what they do. This isn't something I would attend, but ehh to each his own.

Actually no. From the wikipedia article it states that tomatoes come from some part in Spain where they are inexpensive. So they deliberately grow extra ones for this festival, unless its normal for farmers to dump over a metric ton of produce on a particular day of the year.

Tomatoes like other foods can be dried to be saved up to 4 years if kept in proper storage. Food like this can be fed to the hungry don't you think? Or at least composted, jarred whatever.

I think this is awesome. It is on my list of things to do before I die. It may seem stupid but I'm sure if we examine some of the things we do for fun are not the most intelligent things.

Second the waste food argument doesn't really matter or make sense because of how economics work in our world market system.

We pay people not to grow food even though people are starving else where in the world. Why? because we are afraid to upset the people who farm in these areas and then they are unable to sell their crops because we are handing ours out for free. They can't sell anything, loose their land and now there are more hungry poor people.

It may not seem like the most intelligent design but it is the one we currently use.

---------------------
BTW this is a seriously Economics and Market system for Dummies version. It's so basic all it's missing is lil pictures to help explain.

I probably would never go and waste the tomaotoes, since i love me some good ol tomatoes and salt. But it would be funy if they are having a tomatoes battle. Kind of like a snow ball fight.

I wonder how it came about, especially since the tomato is native to Mexico.

A food fight that later created the pizza? Just makes you wonder especially since you need tomato sauce.

One thing I always say is noddles came from China and tomatoes came from Mexico, what did Italians eat before those two important ingredients for Italian dishes?

Not sure if that's gayer than the apricot fiesta in Patterson.

Me too, but I'd add bullfighting the that list as well.

No.

Pizza's main ingredient is jitomate sauce. Prior to the invasion of 1492, what was the main ingredient for pizza?

I am certain pizza is a stolen idea from the tlayuda which is from Oaxaca Mexico. Main ingredient for tlayuda is beans though
