It is my absolute favorite book in the World..

Ok maybe not my Absolute favorite.. but one of them..

It is a compilation of essays by the late Jose Antonio Burciaga and while a little out dated still lends itself to help us figure out our place in this world..

Default Drink Cultura - Book Club Review

Okay since someone has to start - it might as well be me

Did anyone get this book and read it?

There are 26 chapters in this book and each chapter dealt with an aspect of our lives as Chicanos.

Now I would like you to pick one chapter and tell us how it affected you or how you can identity with it.

Lets try to keep this thread going for at least a couple of days so that everyone can have a chance of reading and reviewing the replies. Then we can pick another book.

I will do my review tomorrow

One chapter I liked was The Joy of Jalapenos

" Father always went for the hottest one. If it was a dud, he would ask for another. Sometimes one chile was so hot that it took two meals to finish. "

I remember watching my father to the same thing - heck I do it now

Then he also goes on to instruct on how to get the most out of a fresh jalapeno - I guess you are supposed to "cup the pepper with both hands and blow warm breath onto it while rolling it between your plams. This is called 'getting the jalapeno angry.' It's supposed to get hotter if you curse it in Spanish." LMAOOOOO

I like this description of a jalapeno > a phallic plant food

I just finished the book lastnight.

I also enjoyed the story about his "mixed marriage".

My mom is from El Paso and when I get together with my cousins from NM and TX, it's like we're from 2 different worlds (I'm a California boy).

He's right when he says El Paso has the BEST Mexican food (stateside at least).

Good book. I enjoyed it

I liked the part where he was asked "What are you?"

And he responded "Soy Mexicano" and.."I'm also a Gabacho" and went on to say "if thats not what a Chicano is then what is he?" or something to that effect

Since we are about to start a new book for the Book Club - I was wondering if anybody still has some reviews to post about the last book we read - Drink Cultura.

So here is your chance to post what you thought about the book one last time.

I bought this book last weekend but I'm not done reading it. I've been slacking. It's a short and sweet book & so far I find it humerous (it made me laugh out loud a few times) and it also adds to my appereciation for my culture.

I know I posted a similar response regarding this book in another thread but it applies here also.
