Welcome everyone to Genealogy on SOY!
Welcome forum members to the new Genealogy forum!
I am very thankful to Sal, Sj and the rest, for giving us this opportunity to help you all dive deep into our own histories. Each one of us has our own family stories that will eventually unfold in front of our eyes as time goes on. For a lot of you I am sure you never even really thought of doing this before because you were probably wrapped up in your life and doing other things. While some of you may just be thinking "who cares". Well this is where caring begins and an incredible journey that is "YOU" will start. But be prepared! Some of you will find this boring and others will find it interesting. Understand that this is a life long commitment. Because what your doing now is not just for you alone! It is for all your future generations to have passed down to them. Plus along with passing it down you also pass down the duty of keeping it going. If your interested in Chicano History.... YOUR HISTORY then take a pen and a notepad right now. The very first thing I want you to do is to talk with all of your family members. Interview each member individually going as far back as possible. Remember your grandmother or grandfather that you visit once in a blue moon? Well go and see her or him or them. They are excellent sources of information. Ask them where they were born, what it was like when they were growing up as children? Ask them to show you old family photo's and tell you about the people in the pictures. Who they were, what their names were and where they were born. Also ask them about family documents and ask them if you can see what they may have tucked away in a drawer somewhere. Write it ALL DOWN as accurately as you can get it. This is your starting point. This will give you information on where your ancestors came from and who your family is and how many other families tie into your family. You'd be surprised at the number cousins you find out that you have from families that tie into yours. Ask as much questions and information as you can even the little stuff because those are the kind of things that may later on in the future help you in your quest to figure something out. I will type more later but I want anybody who has questions to feel free to post them. If I can answer you I will or if I don't know then I will try to find out for you if I can or at least point you in the right direction hopefully. Once again welcome! EHP |
Re: Welcome everyone to Genealogy on SOY!
I'm glad that soy has finally decided to have a forum like this. It should be interesting to see how many Brown people on this site will become more interested in learning more about their identity, ancestry, history, etc. and sharing their research here

Re: Welcome everyone to Genealogy on SOY!
My family has lots of information on our Genealogy so I am very fortunate. My Mom's people were Cherokee from the Carolinas until the Trail of Tears when they were forced into Oklahoma. My Dad's people came here from England and other places in Northern Europe and were all here in what is now the US before 1750.

Re: Welcome everyone to Genealogy on SOY!
As much as i'd like to know, i probably never will. All of my grandparents died before I was even born except for one but she passed away last year.
I tried talking to my parents about their past but since their parents died while they were still young (my dad was an infant when he lost both parents), they don't know much about their own history of how they got to where they were raised. And my last name is so common, i'd be going in circles trying to figure out it's origin. |
Re: Welcome everyone to Genealogy on SOY!
well i know that my dad's side is Michoacano to the bone. My mom's side is a little more difficult. She's from the Monterrey area, her dad is half Spanish and her mom left when she was very young so I don't know much about that lineage. All I know is that I'm indigenous like a mofo.

You'd be surprised at what you can find plus if you looked at my post about Mexican birth certificates they actually go back two generations from what I have heard, on the actual certificates. So it would serve you well to get their names and dates of birth and then go to the vital records office in Mexico or through maybe the consulate and you just may find what your looking for. Plus you may find a number of relatives you didn't know you had. Give it a shot, you got nothing to lose! EHP |
