The 42nd annual Chicano Park Day celebration will take place on Saturday, April 21, 2012, 10 am to 5 pm, in historic Chicano Park, located in the Barrio Logan community, south of downtown San Diego, under the San Diego-Coronado bridge. This family event is always free and open to the public. The theme for the 42nd Chicano Park Day, represented in the poster designed by Victor Cordero, is "Lowriders: Part of Chicano Park's History, Culture, Pride & Future!' Posters can be purchased for $10.
Established by Chicano activists on April 22, 1970, Chicano Park has received international recognition as a major public art site for its commanding mural paintings of the past and present struggle of Mexican and Chicano history. Visitors to Chicano Park Day will experience traditional music and dance, including one of the most beautiful performances of Aztec Indigenous dance, coordinated by Toltecas en Aztlán. Other dance groups scheduled to perform include Ballet Folklórico de Casa Familiar, Ballet Folklórico Aquetzalli and danza Zapateado rebelde by Mujeres en Resistencia. Bands performing this year include Quino & Quinazo, Aztlan Underground, Peligroso Caramelo, Alas de Mosca, Unified Division, 20:12, Mariachi Imperial de San Diego, Angel Lita, Sumatra, Big J, and Back N Time. The event will also include a blessing by Tim Red Bird and the Red Warriors. The lowrider keynote speaker will be Hector Gonzales from Lincoln Park in El Paso, Texas. Other guest speakers include Gabriel Gaytan, artist from El Paso, Texas, Rudy Gonzales, son of Rudolfo "Corky" Gonzales from the Crusade for Justice (Denver, Colorado). Victor Ochoa and Guillermo Rosette will speak on the Mural Restoration Project and students from O'Farrell Community School will present their Cesar Chavez project. Other speakers include representatives from the Brown Berets en Aztlan, Lowrider Council, Caliposas, and the Chicano Park Steering Committee. In addition, there will be a display of classic lowrider cars presented by the Amigos Car Club, children's art workshop (all ages invited) led by muralist Victor Ochoa and various informational booths. Food, arts and crafts vendors will be selling their specialties through Chicano Park. Public transportation: Bus route #11 or take the blue line trolley to the Barrio Logan station or orange line trolley to 25th and Commercial.
